GREATEST THREAT in 150 years

This may be the most important year in our nation's history since the southern States broke away from the union before the civil war.

We have strayed so far from the limits placed on the federal government that retiring Justice John Paul Stevens said last week that over his tenure on the Supreme Court the country has become more conservative. This blatant ignorance of the oppressive laws and taxes on citizens reeks of an aristocrat's view of the peons' lives. A quick review of the country and federal government under even President Kennedy reminds us of the freedoms we've lost over the past 50 years, the opposite of conservatism.

Over that same 60 years, we've had some brilliant predictions about what was happening within the political class that would crush the foundational freedoms of our country. The first that I read was None Dare Call It Treason in 1964. The title is part of a longer quote: "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? For if it prosper, none dare call it treason." Sir John Harrington, 1561-1612

My frustration at the country's direction led me to pick up the Federalist Papers 30 years later. I was astounded to learn that our Founding Fathers warned of the same tyrannical government. The great thing about reading about government tyranny in the Federalist Papers, though, is that they also present the blocks to tyranny found in the United States Constitution. People, like me, don't have to depend on "feeling" that something is wrong; the Federalist Papers give us the facts and reasons for that "feeling" and solutions within the Constitution.
Never has the warning found in Federalist Paper #1, paragraph #1 been more timely:

You are asked to study and consider adopting a new Constitution for the United States of America to replace the current, ineffective federal government. This is a very important decision. Our country's existence depends on it. So does the safety and welfare of its people, communities, and States. We will decide the fate of a nation that is, in many respects, the most interesting in the world.

The people of this country will decide important questions: Can societies establish a good government by careful thought and choice? Or are people destined to be governed only by accident and force? The answers depend on our response to the current crisis. And the wrong decision will be unfortunate for all of mankind.*
